The Water Picture in Ubud
Ubud's water is the most distinctive in our coverage area, because the geology is completely different from the coastal south. Ubud sits inland in the central highlands, and many properties are fed by spring water (mata air) or shallow wells drawing from spring-influenced sources rather than the deep coastal aquifer. That gives Ubud a reputation for clean, soft water — which is partly deserved and partly a dangerous oversimplification.
On the positive side, Ubud spring-fed water often has low TDS, frequently under 150 ppm, and low hardness — so the scale problems that plague Uluwatu are far milder here, and a heavy reverse osmosis system can even be overkill for mineral removal. The catch is biological. Spring and surface-influenced water in a lush, agricultural, livestock-heavy area carries a real risk of bacterial and protozoal contamination, including organisms like Giardia. Low TDS does not mean safe to drink. For most Ubud properties, the single most important treatment is UV sterilisation, not RO.
So our Ubud recommendation often inverts the coastal pattern: a good sediment pre-filter to handle wet-season turbidity, then a UV steriliser as the primary drinking-water safety stage, with RO added only where testing shows elevated minerals. Ubud villas and the many long-stay residents and retreat operators here value getting this right, because the water can taste excellent while still being microbiologically unsafe.
