The Water Picture in Canggu
Canggu has grown from rice fields into one of Bali's densest villa belts in barely a decade, and the water infrastructure has not kept pace. PDAM mains reach only a handful of streets, so the overwhelming majority of Canggu villas — across Batu Bolong, Echo Beach, Tibubeneng and Padang Linjong — draw from private bore wells. Those wells pull from a shallow coastal aquifer that sits beneath a very high density of septic soak-aways, which is the core of the local water problem.
On the meter, Canggu well water typically reads 250–450 ppm TDS, climbing in the dry season as the aquifer draws down. Hardness is moderate to high, enough to scale water-heater elements and leave film on shower glass within months. The bigger concern is biological: the combination of shallow wells, dense septic systems and wet-season flooding means we regularly find elevated bacterial risk in Canggu samples. That is why we recommend, as a standard Canggu setup, a whole-house sediment pre-filter for the property plus an under-sink RO with a UV stage for the kitchen drinking tap.
